Important takeaways:

Take note of the red threads from these great Black Friday and Cyber Monday emails so that you can start using them in your own mailings.

1. Use clear CTAs

The most important factor in your mailings over this busy shopping period is going to be your use of clear call-to-actions. Without them your subscribers won’t know what to click and what it is the mailing is actually offering them. Make sure that your CTA is easy to see, easy to click, and is placed at both the top and bottom of your mailing (it it’s long). If you’re planning on targeting multiple shoppers within the one mailing, men and women’s fashion for example, be sure to include two separate CTAs for both the convenience of the customer and your own analytics.

2. Create urgency

The best Black Friday and Cyber Monday mailings create a sense of urgency that motivate the reader to take advantage of the offer and shop. Without some kind of deadline there isn’t any real incentive for them to click through, leaving them with the thought that “I can do this another day” which we all know will likely turn into never. Make sure you navigate their interest to your CTA and encourage your readers to follow through with this slight sense of urgency.

3. Be relevant in your design

Take the chance during this season to have some fun with your mailings! There are some really great designs on Pinterest and I really was impressed with the creativity marketers had used in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday mailings. In the US, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are closely tied to Thanksgiving which is a commonly used theme in mailings around this time. And although it’s a common theme, there are a thousand interpretations – each with their own humor and style.

One step up from using still images is taking the opportunity to use gifs. Gifs are a fantastic way to grab the attention of your subscribers and encourage them to click through to your site to shop. However, they must be used tastefully and in a way that isn’t offensive (because there are an abundance of those on the Internet).
